Di Rupo to lead talks on new government formation
Yesterday, the leader of the French speaking socialist party, Elio Di Rupo, has been chosen by the King Albert II, in order to lead the talks on the formation of a new government in Belgium, after the end of an exploratory mission by the Dutch speaking rival Bart De Wever.
The big winner from the Belgium’s parliamentary elections and the Flemish nationalist, De Wever yesterday has made an end of the mission of exploring options for a new government, which had paved the way for the King Albert to choose Di Rupo as a prime minister in waiting.
The King with a new concept of a mission of pre formation has entrusted Di Rupo, which stops short of handling the socialist leader, the prime minister’s job.
De Wever who is hoping the new government to be formed in October, on Thursday has told that there are convergences between the positions of the parties but are not enough yet, for the formation of the government. And as the divisions are still rife between both the French and Dutch speaking parties over the coalition agreement content, it is still not yet clear as which party will enter the government.
Focus is being made on the talks of the state reforms which resulted in the end of the previous government that has bilingual status, including sensitive talks on social security.
If Elio Di Rupo becomes the Prime Minister, then he will be the first one to hold the position of the French speaker since 1974 and would also be the first gay premier, in the history of Belgium.

Brussels- The European Union Capital
Brussels is the capital of Belgium and the de facto capital of the European Union (EU). The city has been a major center of international politics for the last 60 years. Its importance grew significantly when it became the host for many of the institutions of the EU as well as of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The city is also the home of the Belgian monarchy and their current king Albert II.
The city has approximately 1 million inhabitants. The official languages in the city are French and Dutch. The immigrant communities together with the growing number of other Europeans living there made the city very diverse. The city swell during the last 50 years due to the constant influx of immigrants, students, expatriates and people employed in the bureaucratic apparatus. The biggest groups of foreigners came from France, Morocco, Turkey, French speaking Africans
The European Commission, Council of the European Union, European Council and the European Parliament are situated in Brussels. These institutions employ more than 30,000 employees and represent the highest concentration of such in Europe. Therefore, Brussels is considered the de facto capital of the EU. The popularity of this notion is mostly promoted by the mass media. Most often you can see Brussels used as a synonym of the European Union officials or authority.
Most of the European Union buildings are situated in the so-called European Quarter of Brussels. The substantial growth of the EU and the growing importance of the city within the political machine of the organization called for reconstruction of this district. The plans for rebuilding it aim for more efficient use of space as well as new buildings instead of other smaller ones. The main headquarter of NATO is situated in the Harem municipality which is also part of the city of Brussels.
Recently, there have been a lot of discussions about the status of Brussels. Belgium is organized as a federal system between the Dutch speaking Flanders and the French speaking Wallonia. The country has three official languages- French, Dutch and German. It has been long considered “the laboratory of Europe” because of it diversity. In recent years there have been a lot of tensions between the two parts of the country. The situation was made worse by the financial crisis which highlighted even more the big differences between the two parts. This coupled with a couple of unsuccessful attempts to form a government has made the situation worse.
Here, Brussels is an even more interesting case. It is inside Flanders but is predominantly French speaking. Some have proposed that the city of Brussels receives a special status as the European capital district and be under the jurisdiction of the EU, not Flanders or Wallonia. Others have suggested that the city became a separate city state. This new state could become an official capital of the European Union and become financially viable.
Most popular car rental agencies in Brussels are Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Sixt car.
Live in Belgium
If you are looking for a place to spend a part of your life in European style, then the best is in Belgium. The style of living is really human, because everything here is made by people and for people.
What can approve this fact? First of all, that here all shops and cafes usually don’t have any timetables, their curriculums depend on a wish of their owner. Most of them are open till 11p.m., but as an exception, they can close at 5a.m.; it’s a normal thing there. Secondly, banks here are open from 8a.m. till 5p.m. without interval for a lunch. What is more, there is no time limit for shopping. You can spend your money always, but if a shop is open for 24hours per day, there must be a sign like nachtwinkel or magasin de nuit.
Living here is much cheaper than living in any other European country. You don’t have to pay tips, it’s obligatory only in hotels, but usually bill includes price for service. But there is one big negative side for clubbers; cigarettes and alcohol are too expensive there. It looks like political thing, like everything is cheap, except products, which reduce people’s life.
Besides, the government takes care of families. There are other propositions for small kids in restaurants, food is cheaper. The transport for children is free till the age of 12. There are some programs, which help young people financially and pay money for small families. You can even get special offers in the bank, like credit for a lower percent of interest.
To live cheaper, you can rent a hostel or hospitality house. It will depend on the living conditions you want. Everything more will be more expensive.
Belgium is really cheap to live in, but I want to repeat one important thing. Here everything depends on your supply and demand.
