Di Rupo to lead talks

Yesterday, the leader of the French speaking socialist party, Elio Di Rupo, has been chosen by the King Albert II, in order to lead the talks on the formation of a new government in Belgium, after the end of an exploratory mission by the Dutch speaking rival Bart De Wever.

The big winner from the Belgium’s parliamentary elections and the Flemish nationalist, De Wever yesterday has made an end of the mission of exploring options for a new government, which had paved the way for the King Albert to choose Di Rupo as a prime minister in waiting.

The King with a new concept of a mission of pre formation has entrusted Di Rupo, which stops short of handling the socialist leader, the prime minister’s job.

De Wever who is hoping the new government to be formed in October, on Thursday has told that there are convergences between the positions of the parties but are not enough yet, for the formation of the government. And as the divisions are still rife between both the French and Dutch speaking parties over the coalition agreement content, it is still not yet clear as which party will enter the government.

Focus is being made on the talks of the state reforms which resulted in the end of the previous government that has bilingual status, including sensitive talks on social security.

If Elio Di Rupo becomes the Prime Minister, then he will be the first one to hold the position of the French speaker since 1974 and would also be the first gay premier, in the history of Belgium.
